Landscape architect Gensler's design followed a recent pledge of up to £60m by London mayor Boris Johnson to build London River Park. The firm will shortly submit detailed plans to the City of London Corporation.
London River Park will run along the north bank of the Thames between Blackfriars and the Tower of London. Eight pod-shaped pavilions will define the walkway, to be lined by trees and plants.
Johnson said: "The sheer beauty of this structure will provide another amazing attraction for the capital.
The design is due for completion in time for next year's Olympic Games and the Queen's diamond jubilee.
