Garden Retail Awards scheduled to kick-start gardening season

Details of new venue, date and categories revealed for sector's prestigious awards presentation.

The Garden Retail Awards annual ceremony, organised by Horticulture Week, is to move from November to February, allowing winning businesses to kick-start the garden industry season with the news of their win in these prestigious national awards.

The 2015 awards will also feature a number of exciting new categories and a move to a new venue - the Grand Connaught Rooms in central London - for the presentation in front of the leading lights of the garden industry.

The date of the next awards will be 26 February 2015 - a change that will give entrants much more time to prepare their entries.

Chairman of judges Matthew Appleby said: "Our market research has helped us to improve the awards. The change of date is designed to help garden centre owners have more time to prepare entries. The event will be after the busy Christmas period and winners will be able to launch into the 2015 season with a prestigious award to show customers."

New awards among the 19 categories include Best Garden Centre Event to recognise the best seasonal event, such as a Christmas grotto or Mother's Day or Easter display, for example.

Also new will be Best New Gardening Product for an item of merchandise that demonstrates innovation and fills a gap in the market for the amateur gardener. Examples might include a new fertiliser, tool or compost.

A third new category is Best Catering Staff, for the staff member or team who have helped the centre to operate its catering function to the highest standard.
