Garden director moves to UAE

Executive director of Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden in Florida Mike Maunders is moving to the United Arab Emirates to oversee the botanical features of the $1bn (£587m) Al Ain Wildlife Park & Resort.

Maunders will leave Fairchild in mid-November and take up the post of director of botany and landscape at the project, which will be built near Abu Dhabi.

The 900ha resort will be a tourist attraction and residential area, combining botanical gardens, natural areas for wildlife, a zoo, hotels as well as retail outlets.

Construction begins next February and Maunders will oversee the creation of nine desert ecosystems as well as a 4ha botanical garden. The first phase is to be completed by 2010.
