Garden centre sales hit heights as good weather brings gardeners out

Garden retailers saw sales take off during the last week as much of the UK enjoyed settled good weather.

Against poor trading in the same week in 2013, figures supplied to Horticulture Week from leading garden centres suggest sales in the week to 5 May were 45 per cent up.

Aquatics were up 28 per cent, clothing was up 10 per cent, food was up 20 per cent, furniture was up 300 per cent, sundries were up 100 per cent, gifts were up eight per cent, houseplants were up 20 per cent, machinery was up 300 per cent, outdoor plant were up 170 per cent, and catering was up 10 per cent.

Craft was down two per cent, books were down 15 per cent, and pets were down one per cent.

Overall sales were up 45 per cent.

Buckingham Nurseries assistant general manager Mike Easom said: "Plants were 107 per cent up. I believe we have had a record breaking week on nearly all our categories."
