Garden centre sales fail to match High Street performance in February

Garden centre sales failed to match the High Street in February, with garden retail overall monthly returns down 2.3 per cent, compared with a 0.9 per cent drop in general retail.

According to BDO's High Street Sales Tracker the brightest spots in retail were outdoor clothing, such as coats and boots.

In garden centres, clothing was 20.8 per cent up according to the GCA.

After the wettest winter period since rainfall records began, sales of Town & Country's Rutland Neoprene-lined Wellington boot was up more than 100 per cent and the Charnwood Ankle boot up 130 per cent on the same period in the previous year.

Briers said boot sales were double the level of last year.
