Garden centre sales up 7 per cent in week to November 22

Garden centre sales are up seven per cent for the week ending 22 November compared to the same week in 2012, according to figures supplied to Horticulture Week.

Alton Garden Centre director Andy Bunker said: "Christmas is quite buoyant. Real Christmas trees will kick in this week and artificial trees are going well. Christmas has started early. The weather has helped customers linger longer."

Christmas sales are 15 per cent up and amount to 25 per cent of sales.

Clothing is 25 per cent up, the craft category is two per cent up, food is 15 per cent up, sundries is one per cent up, gifts is 20 per cent up, houseplants is five per cent up and pets is five per cent up.

Aquatics is 10 per cent down, books is five per cent down, outdoor plants is 15 per cent down and the restaurant category is one per cent down.
