Garden centre justifies Queen's funeral opening

The owner of Claremont Garden Centre in Woodham Mortimer, Essex has justified opening on the Queen's funeral bank holiday in a Facebook post.

Most retailers are closed, including garden centre and DIY chains.
Owner John Kiernan said after more than one adverse Facebook comment: "As the owner of Claremont Garden Centre I want to thank everyone on our Facebook page for their kind and considered response, apart from a couple of disparaging remarks from people who don’t really understand who I am, so to answer some of the questions nearly all the staff will not be working on the day of the funeral as they wish to stay at home and pay their respects which I in turn respect however as I previously explained the garden centre will remain open under normal bank holiday trading hours 9am till 5.30pm and will be operated by myself and my family and a couple of long term staff in order to serve the local community as we have done every other bank holiday, the profit proceeds from the day will be going to the FREE THE BEARS charity in honour of her majesty’s association with Paddington bear, thank you for time to read my words."
