Garden Centre Association reports plant sales down 19% in March

Garden centres are still well behind 2009 with early indications from the Garden Centre Association showing March was 5% down on 2009 among the 14 garden centres in the survey.

Gifts                                8% up                              13% up

Foodhall and farmshops 22%  up                            28% up

Catering                            0%                                  1.5% up

Overall                             4%  down                           5% down


Garden Centre Association chief executive Gillie Westwood said: "March was not a good month-rather disappointing. We are hoping April will be better. Everyone is chomping at the bit. Everything's behind. You expect daffodils for St David's Day on 1 March and they are still coming up in April."
