Further 100,000 new trees for Yorkshire announced

Separately from the Northern Forest, the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) will plant more than 100,000 trees across the area this winter, in partnership with the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, the Forestry Commission and the Woodland Trust.

In all, the trust will create 38 new woodlands covering 75 hectares as part of its aim to double the Dales' broadleaf tree cover  by 2020.

At the 10-hectare Mearbeck Farm site near Settle, 11,000 sessile oak, common alder, goat willow, downy birch, rowan, aspen, scots pine, holly, hazel and hawthorn will be planted to improve biodiversity and enhance the landscape.

Many smaller woodland creation projects will also receive support this winter, including schemes near Ripon, Richmond, Ingleton, Sedbergh, Skipton and York.

YDMT representative Sarah Pettifer said: "The focus of the Northern Forest here will be on the Leeds city region rather than the Yorkshire Dales National Park. That said it's good that the government is backing it, as it will increase awareness of the benefits of trees."

She added: "We buy from Thorpe Trees, a nursery here in Yorkshire, to ensure local provenanance and help their chances of survival. Most of planting is by local contractors, though we have some volunteer days involving local companies and even asylum seekers."

The trust has also just been awarded a further £400,000 from the People’s Postcode Lottery, "to support a range of projects that help sustain the landscape, environment, economy and communities of the Yorkshire Dales". It has received some £1,625,000 in all from the charity lottery over the last nine years.
