Furniture firm to open showroom

Solus Garden & Leisure garden furniture arm Denewood is opening a new showroom at its Droitwich plant, with managing director Nick Davies insisting there is life in the garden furniture market.

"There's no question the market has been tough." Davies said. "The feedback from the SOLEX show last week was that while there may have been plenty of people milling about, maybe there weren't many orders. (Many retailers have) a lot of stock left. But you can't judge the market by one bad year. Last year was good. This year was not the best, but you can't just bale out."

HTA figures suggested garden furniture dropped from a £600m to £300m market from 2003 to 2007 but suggested many owners would be buying new furniture soon if normal replacement cycles happened.

- Solus has bought the Joseph Bentley tool business from Decco.
