Melkior, a new organically certified variety of shallot sets, took Gold at last month's Sival trade show in France.

Claimed to be the first mildew-resistant shallot, with long storage capacity, Melkior is the result of 12 years' breeding work by INRA - the French National Agricultural Research Institute - and breeder AgriObtentions.

It is expected to appeal to both commercial and home growers, according to Fleuron d'Anjou, the French grower cooperative which supplies it.
