The Institute of Chartered Foresters (ICF) has awarded its top honour, the Institute's Medal, to tree pathologist Dr Joan Webber.

Webber has worked at Forest Research since 1989, and is currently principal pathologist and head of the Tree Health Research Group. She has published over 50 papers, including on the transmission of Dutch elm disease.

Meanwhile the Right Reverend James Jones has been given Honorary Fellowship of the institute for outstanding services to the forestry industry, an award with only 12 previous holders.

Jones championed community-led regeneration and sustainable construction during his 15 years as Bishop of Liverpool until his retirement last year, and in 2012 chaired the Independent Panel for Forestry, which had a key role in persuading the government to abandon its proposed sell-off of public forests.

Alan Motion and Tom Jenkins both receive the President's Award in recognition of their work as ICF Examinations Board chair and moderator respectively.

Jenkins has just been confirmed as the head of Forest Research in Wales, a post he takes up next month following the retirement of Professor Hugh Evans.

All four will be presented with their awards at the Trees, People and the Built Environment II conference in Birmingham next month.
