Forestry England launches as forestry in Scotland becomes fully devolved to two new Scottish Government agencies

Forest Enterprise England, the executive agency of the Forestry Commission responsible for managing its forest estate in England, has from today (1 April) become Forestry England.

It is England’s largest land manager, with around 1,000 staff as well as 20,000 volunteers and 80,000 members.

It remains part of the Forestry Commission, itself a non-ministerial government department within Defra, which will continue to provide expert advice, give grants, regulate tree felling and oversee protection from pests and diseases.

Also remaining within the Commission is Forest Research, the UK's main organisation for forestry and tree-related research, with stations in England, Scotland and Wales.

Meanwhile in Scotland, today also marks the end of Forestry Commission Scotland and Forest Enterprise Scotland. Instead, forestry is now fully devolved to two new Scottish Government agencies accountable to Scotland's ministers and parliament.

These are Forestry and Land Scotland, which will manage and promote Scotland’s national forests and other public land, and Scottish Forestry, responsible for forestry policy, support and regulation.

For the past six years, public forestry in Wales has been a function of Natural Resources Wales, while in Northern Ireland the Forest Service is part of the province's Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
