Forestry Commission to clear trees after vandalism

Vandalised trees that pose a danger to people have forced the closure of one of the busiest roads in south Wales.

Tree gangs have been called in to cut down the trees beside the A4059 near the Abercynon roundabout. It will be shut for five successive Sundays from next month.

"Many of these trees were damaged in fires that were deliberately started," said Peter Cloke, deputy district manager for Forestry Commission Wales.

"We have reached the stage where some are falling close to the road and pose an increasing risk to people. We have no alternative but to remove them."

Cloke said traffic on the road was a far cry from how it was when the trees were planted 44 years ago, mainly to provide pit props for the mining industry.

Woodland manager Dai Evans, who helped plant the trees in 1964, said: "Nobody thought harvesting them would be such a problem.

"The road was so quiet. We would leave the van by the side of the road all day and sit on the kerb to eat our sandwiches at lunchtime."
