Flower shows 'under threat', says Horticultural Exhibitors Association chairman Kelvin Harbutt

Horticultural Exhibitors Association (HEA) chairman Kelvin Harbutt has said "at least half" of UK flower shows are under threat as consumers buy plants online and via mail order.

Rougham Hall Nurseries owner Harbutt, speaking at the Southport Flower Show, said: "The HEA is offering more help and support to growers and members because at least half of the shows are under threat without this type of promotion. The problem occurs across the board. Everyone has dwindling returns, which means exhibitors are looking elsewhere for their income. If they concentrate on mail order and the internet they see the public less and less."

The HEA plans a "cohesive" web marketing campaign for shows in 2010 to help combat the problem. Harbutt added: "We will have regional events listed, explaining to the public how shows need support to keep them going."
