Floristry prize makes debut at Chelsea 2009

Floristry is back in fashion at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show this year.

For the first time, UK professional florists will be competing for the title Chelsea Florist of the Year during the show on 19-23 May 2009.

Organised by the RHS in association with the British Florist Association (BFA), there is also a Young Chelsea Florist of the Year category.

Finalists from regional heats will come to the show in May and will be asked to create a display of fresh flowers and foliage on the spot. The arrangements will then be placed within the show's Great Pavilion.

Brazilian-born florist Zita Elze will also be creating an installation inside the pavilion using British-grown flowers, foliage, trees and plants.

Her debut design will feature a perspex house, set among the trees, and is entitled A Celebration of Life.

Visitors to the show will also be able to see floral arrangement in action in the Floral Design Marquee. The National Association of Floral Arrangement Societies (NAFAS) will be working on a floral design throughout the week of the show.
