The hardy gerbera flowers from spring until the first frost, is not sensitive to pests and diseases, can resist extreme outdoor conditions, gives up to 100 flowers per plant a year and is available in 20 colours. It can be planted directly in the garden as well in pots on a terrace.
Over the past two years, there have been trials in more than 30 countries.
Area export manager Marcel van Vemde said the new Power Flower campaign will feature at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show in a schools growing competition with The Sun newspaper. The competition will also run in the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium, with the final at Floriade in May.
Keukenhof will feature the gerbera this year in a 500sq m display and the plant will be shown around the UK in a customised VW camper van.
