Extreme weather driving big increase in search for traders says TrustMark

Extreme weather conditions and vaulting energy prices seen TrustMark, the Government-backed quality mark for traders provide 5,277,705 search results to homeowners using its website and telephone helpline to find people to work on their gardens and homes.

Head of marketing Stuart Carter said: "Soaring energy prices coupled with extreme weather were key contributors for homeowners seeking out our tradesmen last year.

"Such high figures show consumers are searching for qualified and reputable tradesman rather than looking on any ‘find-a-trader’ websites, which do little or no checks on the firms they are listing."

TrustMark traders' details had increased year on year, he said, crediting marketing pushes, improved website activity and working with Government departments, member firms and consumer groups.

Organisations such as Citizens Advice, Age UK and the Trading Standards Institute were all signposting people to TrustMark, said Carter.

During 2013 the average number of details displayed across all trades rose by 36% compared to the same period in 2012.

Tree consultants, tree surgeons and garden landscapers saw large increases.

In December TrustMark saw a surge in demand from the previous month for fence installers, up 65 per cent, underground waterproofing specialists, up 65 per cent and flood-recovery specialists, up 313 per cent.

"The severe weather conditions experienced throughout the UK would have contributed significantly to these growths."

All TrustMark firms’ technical skills are independently checked through on-site inspections.
