The impacts of extreme climatic conditions on production, very high production costs, and the sharp increases in raw material and energy prices, as well as higher minimum wages, make further optimisations essential in both asparagus and berry production and in direct marketing.

Both new and proven products alike will be on display at the Messe Karlsruhe at the dual trade fairs expoSE & expoDirekt from 23rd to 24th November 2022. A total of around 400 exhibitors from eleven countries will be presenting at the 26th expoSE – Europe's leading trade fair for asparagus and berry production – and 11th expoDirekt – Germany's largest specialist trade fair for agricultural direct marketing.

The exhibitors at the expoSE include, for instance, sanitary and residential container manufacturer Adapteo, harvester manufacturer Ant Robotics, greenhouse manufacturer Idromeccanica Luccini, as well as Insolight, a Swiss company that combines cultural protection with solar panels. New companies focused on optimising irrigation – a particularly important topic after a very dry season – will also take part, such as ecoTube Germany, farmunited, IMKO Micromodultechnik and Weenat.

There are many creative solutions for staffing shortages, which were a significant problem this year, ranging from new POS systems and payment stations to vending machines and self-service shops, and even completely unmanned stores. Bischof Automaten is a new addition in this area with its wide range of vending machines, for example, along with Kesseböhmer product presentation, which offers an unmanned farm shop, and NonStop Shop, with its customised vending machines.

Here are just some of the companies joining the expoDirekt portfolio with their extended product ranges this year: Grischberli with its Franconian kettle chips, Mahlzeit Hofgenuss with vegan spreads and dips, Patrizio Gioia with olives and olive specialities, naschlabor with fruit juice jelly sweets, the Wohlgemuth-Schnürr vineyard with its wines, as well as Martens Trading with hand-painted ceramics (including products bearing an asparagus motif).
