EU rules prompt Amenity Forum to launch best-practice guide on herbicides

Publication of Best Practice Guidance Note: Hard Surface Herbicide Application was prompted by the EU water framework directive and plant protection products (sustainable use) rules on minimising risk of water contamination from pesticides.

Chair John Moverley said this was the latest initiative to ramp up the importance of the regulations, which started with a campaign launch at Saltex and will continue at a conference on 22 November in Derby.

"We have made significant progress in our sector over recent years and within our membership the need for high standards of practice and operation is very much recognised. We seek to roll out such practice across the whole sector."

The guidance says on hard surfaces herbicides have to be applied "appropriately" to avoid run-off into urban drainage systems. Meanwhile a full risk assessment should be undertaken before application. It defines hard surfacing and looks at application.
