English Ridgeview sparkling wine clocks up second international prize

A Sussex sparkling wine producer has beaten off rivals to retake the Best Bottle Fermented Sparkling Wine trophy in the 2011 International Wine & Spirit Competition.

Ridgeview Wine Estate previously won the title - awarded after a two-stage blind tasting judging process - in 2005. It also claimed the Decanter World Wine award for overall Best Sparkling Wine last year.

Ridgeview director and winemaker Mike Roberts said: "What we are most pleased about is that we are proving it is not a one-off and that England is now a serious contender in the international wine market." The Wine & Spirit competition attracts entries from more than 85 countries.

The award caps a memorable year for the South Downs winemaker. Its rose sparkling wine was served at Buckingham Palace in honour of US president Barack Obama's visit in May.

Roberts was also awarded an MBE for his services to the English wine industry in June.
