How to engage millions of new 'lockdown' gardeners this season - with David Domoney and Evergreen's Mark Portman on the Horticulture Week Podcast

Potential, plant 'super' powers, products and projects for 2021 are the focus in the latest Horticulture Week podcast.

TV gardener David Domoney and Evergreen UK and Ireland MD Mark Portman discuss how the garden industry can keep hold of the new 'lockdown' gardeners, wooing them with the 'super powers' of plants and products to make growing easy and reliable.

With more than 40% of the 3 million new 'lockdown' gardeners still interested in gardening and in addition, existing gardeners gardening more, Mark Portman tells HW editor Matthew Appleby how he believes the UK market holds great potential for garden retailers and their suppliers in 2021.

David Domoney offers insights on how retailers can engage those new gardeners by giving people an "early good first experience of plants" to help them "get the bug", by promoting easy-to-germinate seeds, easy-to-grow plants with "sensory and emotional connections" or by communicating the "super powers" of plants, as outlined in his new book, "A Houseplant Changed My Life".

Portman outlines the importance of "high efficacy products" and "natural product" but that above all, to keep these new customers "we've got to make sure they have a positive experience of the product that they use".

And David Domoney gives a little behind-the-scenes exclusive on Alan Titchmarsh's hidden James Bond musical talents during filming on ITV1's Love Your Garden.
