EMR scientists give strawberry lectures

The five-day International Strawberry Symposium in Beijing, China, which concluded on Wednesday, featured a strong UK presence.

Four East Malling Research (EMR) scientists - Dr David Simpson, Professor Xiangming Xu, Adam Whitehouse and Abi Johnson - each delivered presentations to the conference.

Simpson provided an overview of current breeding research at East Malling and across north-west Europe, while Xu explained how models are being developed to predict risk of grey mould infection.

Whitehouse spoke about breeding strawberries for the 60-day cropping system, and Johnson gave a lecture on the genetics of water use efficiency in strawberries.

EMR researchers have given presentations at all six previous conferences, which are held every four years.
