Frosts Garden Centres is now stocking 16 breeds at its Woburn Sands, Millets Farm and Willington stores, along with coops, feeders and feed.
Managing director Paul Wright said: "It's amazing how much interest there is. It is low investment and good return for us. We grow our own chicks as well by incubating the eggs, which creates great interest among customers."
He added: "The importance and benefits of growing your own produce is depicted brilliantly in Alys Fowler's Edible Garden on the BBC. She demonstrates an inspiring passion for cultivating her own garden and the pleasure she receives from doing so.
"These programmes promote the importance and simplicity of grow your own and highlight the subject at a national level. This has a knock on effect at garden centres and we have seen an increase in interest and sales from customers looking to grow their own produce."
Burleydam Garden Centre won the 2009 Garden Retail Best Themed Promotion award for its Good Life Garden, featuring chickens Penelope and Felicity. Dobbies Garden Centres, which sold 1,000 chickens in 2009, said it plans to extend its range this year.
