Eco-friendly garden centre wins over planners in Brighton & Hove

A family firm is defying the recession by turning a derelict car showroom into a nursery and garden centre.

The project to overhaul the garage in Portslade, East Sussex, won over planners recently at Brighton & Hove City Council.

Tates, a local family that runs Paradise Park in Newhaven and South Downs Nurseries and Heritage Centre in Hassocks, will run the ecologically sound centre.

It will include rainwater harvesting, hi-tech insulation and air-source heat pumps. Around 70 new jobs are set to be created.

Councillors overruled advice from planners to reject the project because it would be an out-of-town retail centre, according to press reports.

Managing director Jonathan Tate said his garden centre business was "blooming" despite the recession.
