Dutch growers ship out first orders via webshop

Fifty Dutch growers who set up a webshop in February to sell direct have shipped their first orders across Europe.

The group, which includes Van der Sar Potplanten, sells bedding, house and garden plants through the webshop Green-Base.nl. The site, which was launched at IPM Essen, aims to cut out the middlemen between growers and buyers to ensure quality deliveries.

Van der Sar Potplanten owner Gerard van der Sar said: "Our promotions in Europe have led to buyers from various European countries, as well as Dutch garden centres, signing up. Clients throughout Europe have reacted enthusiastically to the initiative, although they have said they would like to see a wider product selection, both in terms of variety and amount."

Green-Base.nl representative Leandra Deboef said the website had suffered some "growing pains" but the problems had been solved.

"It took a while to fill the webshop. We needed a large assortment for our customers. But there are six of us working on updating the site every day and the assortment is constantly changing."

She said that despite the strong euro there was significant interest from trade buyers in the UK.
