The works required a full renovation to the grounds of an existing property. Semi-mature trees provide defined perimeters, along with 15,000 hawthorns. Drainage was installed in the front lawn and along the entrance drive, followed by installing instant beech hedging flanking both sides of the drive.

The surroundings were transformed to create a number of striking habitats. An evergreen garden comprises sandstone paving and raised edgings against high-quality turf, finished with structural box balls and a 6m specimen red maple. The main informal lawn includes 5,500sq m of seeding, ornamental structure planting, the renovation of a pond and installation of a helipad. The spa and sheltered garden is planted with ornamental shrubs, grasses, box balls, yew cones and cloud pines. Other areas include a wild flower orchard, kitchen garden and tennis court garden.

Judges' comments

"A great deal of work was required to resurrect the extensive grounds of an existing residential property. The contractor worked closely with the landscape architect to deliver this simple scheme on a large scale, in very challenging ground conditions. Following extensive site clearance, groundworks and the installation of drainage and ducting, the contractor imported and spread major quantities of topsoil and ameliorants before planting huge quantities of bulbs, ornamental and specimen shrubs, topiary plants, semi-mature trees and instant hedging. The now beautiful grounds are the direct result of the contractor’s all-round horticultural professionalism."
