A period house with an existing walled garden, this was redesigned to incorporate a leisure building, swimming pool, greenhouse and vegetable beds. To make these elements work together, a design was created that included a sunken lawn with a solid Yorkstone retaining wall and steps. Sawn Yorkstone terraces with brick-on-edge pavers, binding gravel and brick paver pathways that link areas together, an oak pergola walkway, two feature ponds and lots of little details make a walk through it a fascinating journey.

Judges’ comments

"The walled garden of this grade I listed manor house presented the contractor with an opportunity to provide a masterclass in paving and pathways.

"The quality of the hard landscaping — including gravelling and paving, which required some restoration of old tiles etc — is excellent. While the clients’ gardener carried out the planting, all 'soiling' of the planting beds and the turf laying was undertaken by the contractor. This is a very slick scheme demonstrating top-quality workmanship."
