This scheme involved redeveloping a large garden following a major extension of the clients’ home. The new garden has been designed to better integrate with the house, provide more generous spaces for entertaining and better connect the house and terrace with the lawns and swimming pool. The original garden was truncated by a beech hedge, overgrown shrub borders and a massive Victorian greenhouse, the glazing and bricks of which were carefully dismantled and reclaimed for a smaller version to be incorporated into the new scheme.
A potager-style kitchen garden was developed in a previously unused area of the garden. Reclaimed materials from the site have been incorporated where possible. Planting has been refreshed throughout the scheme and new areas have incorporated the clients’ love of Mediterranean plants, clipped box, lavender, alliums, scented roses and ornamental grasses, providing year-round interest.
"Comprising the complete refurbishment of an extensive existing garden, this fantastic scheme has been executed with care, passion and thought. The changes in levels are seamless, the planting exceptional, and the detailing throughout is beautiful, including where reclaimed stone walling and paving has been used. The contractor worked closely with the client to introduce elements that help to make the garden work better for the entire family and the result is a garden where every aspect blends perfectly. This is, quite simply, a lovely scheme that reflects the excellent client/contractor relationship."

Only viewed in December yet finished in May, Outdoor Options was proud to meet the exacting quality and time frame demands of this prestigious scheme designed by Charlotte Rowe Garden Design. Boundary to boundary — and those were changed too — every square metre is beautifully landscaped with the best products, trees, lighting and features that discerning landscapers could wish to use, indeed more akin to a show garden build.

The aesthetic of the design was to reflect the organic flowing lines of the contemporary house, creating a naturalistic and informal landscape, relatively low-maintenance but high in aesthetic and wildlife appeal. The project entailed constructing an entrance drive, extensive cedar wood decking, wildlife pond, lawns, numerous paths around the planting areas and a kitchen garden comprising retaining walls with basalt paving and raised planters. A new wild flower meadow was created with mown paths around the perimeter. Extensive excavations, earth moving and changes of level were required to prepare the accurate levels needed on a sloping site. The flowing curves of the decking, echoing the shape of the house, were a particular challenge.

Outdoor Options was delighted to assist in this superb contemporary house and landscape scheme from concept to completion. Being the firm’s sixth Huf Haus project, it was called on for its experience and knowledge to assist all overlapping areas, but also to help guide Philip Collier Gardens through its first ever design-and-build scheme, which had to meet stringent planning and coding requests. The design encompasses many facets of modern landscaping and affords well-chosen products along with stylised planting. The garden displays great use of relatively compact spaces, giving the feeling of changing scenes as you journey around the property.

PC Landscapes worked closely with the designer and client to create a garden of "rooms". Extensive new limestone paving was laid around the swimming pool and energy canal. A dining terrace was laid over tree cells planted with umbrella pear trees. Purbeck stone retaining walls create differences in levels and line the energy canal and plant room entrance. Oak timber bridges and jetty span the canal and into the existing pond. New planting of Taxus and hornbeam hedging, pleached hornbeam trees and herbaceous borders help delineate the rooms. Large turfed lawns run down to the stream and lead to the new orchard and wild flower meadow. Close collaboration resulted in the resolution of all issues that arose to achieve the client’s desired results.
