Dobbies property director Stuart Wright said:

"We have spent considerable time shaping these plans to make sure they are absolutely right for this important site in York and we are pleased to have finally submitted our application for what we believe will be a fantastic new destination for the region.

"We received a fantastic response about our proposals [for the Nether Poppleton site] from local people with many telling us that they are excited about the prospect of a new garden centre on their doorstep."

Dobbies is set to open a £8m garden centre in Gillingham, Kent in spring 2012. A site is at planning for East Kilbride too.
