Designers rev up for race track

Landscape architects will help turn parts of London into a Formula 1 racing-car track if mayor Ken Livingstone has his way.

He has made a £20-million bid to stage a Monaco-style race after Jenson Button, Nigel Mansell and David Coulthard were among eight drivers to zip along Regent Street in 900-horsepower cars front of 300,000 people. Buckingham Palace has approved the use of Hyde Park for a route that would take in The Mall and attract an estimated two million tourists. Livingstone, who reckons it could happen within four years, said: “If Monaco can do it, so can we. We will bust a gut to put on the best Formula 1 race in the world.” Livingstone wants to convince the world and the International Olympic Committee London that the capital can handle major sporting events.
