Design firm to overhaul old park

Work to start this year on three-year, £400,000 redevelopment.

A new town park suffering the same old problems of neglect is up for a £3.2m overhaul including a “green gym” and amphitheatre. HTA Landscape Design aims to transform Stevenage Town Centre Gardens with new paths and performance piazza, a terraced area overlooking a lake and a stepped amphitheatre. There will be new lights and formal planting. The outdoor gym, near an adjacent fitness club, will include an 800m-circuit track meandering through wooded areas. Benches and beams will be made from recycled timber cleared from the park. Head of landscape design James Lord said: “Like many parks, it has suffered from lack of investment and feels threatening to locals.” The park won £400,000 from the Department of Communities & Local Government and landscape architects were teeing up a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund. Phased work is due to start later this year and end in 2010.
