Speaking to HW after his presentation at yesterday's HTA Garden Futures conference in London, Knight said: "Defra at the moment is targeting no peat by 2030. Wouldn't it be great if that target was to make all growing media sustainable by 2030? That's more intellectually robust when looking at the issues."
Knight said Defra would not broadcast any policy change given Government's sensitivity to accusations of u-turns after the failed Forestry Commission self off plan and Virgin Trains U-turn.
But he said Defra's response to his June Task Force report which is due in December possibly by open letter to Knight, could miss out any reference to "controversial" 2010 White Paper peat elimination targets
He said some Defra cash to fund a secretariat to run research into peat reduction would be "good politics."
