Dead elms present roadside hazard in Cheshire

Hundreds of dead roadside elm trees could topple over and endanger drivers, warns a leading arborist, who has found a use for the potentially hazardous timber.

David Lloyd-Jones said Dutch elm disease swept across the country again last year killing most of the regenerating trees. Many were decaying and ready to fall.

The chairman of the Consulting Arborist Society said he'd identified hundreds of the dead trees alongside A-roads and carriageways in Cheshire.

"These trees represent a potential hazard to road users," said Lloyd-Jones, who added that the Highways Department had failed to respond to his concerns.

Lloyd-Jones' firm, Cheshire Tree Surgeons, could recycle the timber and sell it for use in timber-framed buildings and sheds, he said.

"The principle holds true for almost any tree but elm is particularly beautiful, strong and durable, and these dead ones could be converted.

"We are likely to value the timber more highly than anyone else, which should save money for Cheshire highways or landowners when it comes to the costly job of removal."
