Cranfield University to coordinate agroforestry project

Cranfield University in Bedfordshire will coordinate a "EUR4m-EUR6m" European project to investigate how agroforestry can benefit farming, both economically and environmentally.

A 26-strong group of European and international institutions will be co-ordinated by Dr Paul Burgess of Cranfield's Department of Environmental Science and Technology.

He said: "Given recent concerns on food security, a demand for bio-energy, and environmental issues that require thinking at a landscape-scale, we need a new approach. One way is to work with farmers to identify how integrating trees can produce more sustainable farming systems while maintaining or increasing profitability."

The project will yield recommendations on best practice on farming with trees and will also provide guidance on how individual countries can implement the EU's Ecological Focus Areas as well as other agri-environment measures.
