Councils in need of play rangers

Four local authorities are banding together to commission a play ranger service, following grants from the Big Lottery Fund.

The Somerset councils were awarded £590,000 to improve the provision of play areas and are looking for organisations to bid for ranger services.

Taunton Deane Borough, Sedgemoor, Mendip and West Somerset district councils will work in partnership to provide the service, which will cover four-fifths of the county.

The team of rangers will work with children and raise young people's self esteem by providing the reassuring presence of an adult, said a representative for the councils. The representative added: "Play is not just seen as a way of encouraging children to let off steam but also as an opportunity to increase levels of fitness at a time when the issue of childhood obesity is hitting the headlines."

The councils are joining forces to appoint the rangers to streamline administration.

- Organisations interested in providing the play ranger service should call senior procurement officer David Carpenter on 01823 356369 or email him at
