Pangmore first sought permission last year to fell the tree, in Frome's Kingsway Precinct, which prompted Mendip District Council to impose a tree preservation order (TPO).

The company then tried a second time, citing damage to an adjacent building. But the council said the damage could be rectified without the need to fell the tree.

The organiser of the petition, Julian Hight, said residents' reponse had well exceeded his expectations, adding: "Coupled with 80 objections to the council it really shows the strength of feeling among local people to retain this important green monument."
