Concerns over Green Flag delays

Delays in awarding the Green Flag contract are sparking industry speculation about the cause.

Bidding consortium BCTV, Encams and GreenSpace have denied rumours that they have launched a legal challenge after Communities & Local Government (CLG) awarded the Green Flag contract to current contract holder Civic Trust.

Baroness Andrews was due to announce Civic Trust as the winner at the Green Flag awards ceremony in Liverpool last month. But a CLG representative said the contract has not yet been awarded and could not explain the month-long delay in awarding it. The delay could hold up preparations for 2009's Green Flags, which are expected to be won by up to 1,000 of Britain's best parks.

GreenSpace director Paul Bramhill said there was "no truth" in industry rumours that a legal challenge had been issued against the award of the contract.

He added: "This was meant to be announced in Liverpool or before then. It's very confusing. We're all left waiting, including Civic Trust."

Green Flag manager Paul Todd said: "We're waiting for the CLG to make a decision. We can't comment until then."
