Competition for Newport's renewal

A competition is being held to determine which design to redevelop Newport's Market Square is underway.

Six designs to redevelop the Market Square in Newport, South Wales, will go on display at the Landscape Institute conference in Cardiff on 15-16 March. They are entries in a competition that a jury will judge on 4 April. Urban regeneration body Newport Unlimited, a partnership of the Welsh Assembly, Welsh Development Agency and Newport City Council working with businesses, is overseeing three master-plans for the city’s regeneration. They hope to bring £500m in investment and 5,000 jobs. The central master-plan includes riverside walkways and green public spaces. In the next five years, Newport Unlimited will roll out 60 projects in 15 areas. BBC presenter John Humphrys will chair the Landscape Institute (LI) conference, which is in partnership with the Design Commission for Wales. Speakers include LI president Kathryn Moore and director general Marion Bowman, Welsh Assembly member Sue Essex and designer Wayne Hemingway. Call 020 7299 4500 for details.
