Civic awards earn funding for educational environmental digital archive

The Civic Trust Awards has received £50,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for a built-environment network education project to be piloted in the North West.

The aim is to transform archive material such as photographs into a digital format covering five decades of the awards, launched in 1959 to recognise outstanding open spaces, urban design, architecture and planning.

Since then, more than 6,500 projects have been rewarded for their design and for making a positive social, cultural, environmental or economic contribution to local communities.

HLF North West head Sara Hilton said: "Saving our historic archives is important. This project is bursting with valuable information charting the developments of design in the past 50 years."
