Christmas theme boosts National Trust visits

The National Trust saw a 74 per cent increase in its visitor numbers in December 2011 compared with the previous December.

There were 521,000 visitors to trust properties during the month, helped by an increase in Christmas-themed activity. Attingham in Shropshire saw its busiest ever weekend with its Frost Fair on the first Saturday and Sunday of the month.

The trust is on target to exceed 18 million visitors this year for the first time in its history.

The retail business, which includes shops and online, saw an increase in sales of 24 per cent, while sales in cafes and restaurants rose by 71 per cent in December 2011 over December 2010.
