Chelsea garden remixed for Cityscapes

Cityscapes: Remixed
Cityscapes: Remixed

The first show garden installation in Cityscapes' Remix Garden project has appeared in the courtyard of Oxo Tower Wharf in London.

The garden designed by Jon Sims, 'remixes' the hard landscape materials and plants from Wilson McWilliam Studio's Cloudy Bay Discovery Garden which won a silver-gilt medal at RHS Chelsea Flower Show Garden in May 2013.

Three more Remix Gardens will appear over the summer in the Oxo Tower Wharf Courtyard, designed by Anoushka Feiler, Matthew Childs and Daniel Lobb. A fifth version designed by Studio Wilson McWilliam will appear at RHS London Shades of Autumn Show 22/23 October.

The gardens showcase imaginative responses to greening the urban environment through creative recycling.

Sims gained insight into the construction of the original show garden at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, working as a volunteer with Wilson McWIlliam Studio and contractors Gardenlink, during the build-up period of the show.

The idea behind Sims' design was inspired after visiting the site where all the 'ingredients' of the original show garden designed by Wilson McWilliam Studio were being kept after the show. The idea developed around the theme of storage, whereby the garden had been packed up and transported, from its original location to its new site at Oxo Tower Wharf. Upon delivery the packing crate appears to have broken open, with its contents spilling out revealing a new remixed arrangement.

Sims, a recent graduate from London College of Garden Design, won the Society of Garden Designers Student Award 2012.

Sims said: "Having spent time on the original build at Chelsea, it's been a fantastic opportunity to remix this garden."

Wilson McWilliam Studio director Andrew Wilson said: "It always feels anti-climactic when a garden that has been a year in the planning and almost a month in construction is taken apart and removed. This year with Cityscapes, the garden lives on in various creative re-incarnations by some very talented young designers."
