Carbon-management tool enables companies to calculate carbon footprint

Change.ie is offering a website service for those keen to adopt a green agenda for their businesses, or to prepare for the demands that might be put on them by climate change legislation, which was demonstrated at the Kildare show.

Change.ie, Ireland's national climate-change awareness campaign, has been running for two years.

Its website enables individuals to calculate their personal carbon number, and makes recommendations as to how it could be reduced.

"We've now developed a carbon management tool for businesses, which was launched this April," said representative Philip Dowling.

"The calculations are much more detailed than for the personal programme and aim to identify the most important areas of fuel and energy use and therefore the areas that will have the greatest impact on profitability."

Dowling added: "We don't expect everybody will do everything that's recommended, but we're trying to give them the information to make sound business decisions."

Anyone can use the website service (www.change.ie) even if they are not in Ireland, but some of the assumptions on which recommendations will be made are based on the situation in Ireland.
