The local authority is expanding its NVQ 2 Horticulture programme and a dozen 18- to 24-year-olds will start in November and be paid £95 per week. The new apprentices will spend four days a week working in the council's parks department and one day a week at college.
Calderdale parks and street scene manager Mark Dempsey said: "We started thinking about the age profile of the people working in the department and where we are going to be in five or 10 years' time."
The application stage for the scheme closed on Monday (12 October). Dempsey said around 400 people were expected to apply for the places.
