Q: Is there anything new for treating cut stumps?

A: Ecoplug Max from Nomix Enivro is a herbicide application containing 300mg of granular glyphosate that works to kill the stump and prevent foliage regrowth. Being a plug, there is no risk to the operator from exposure or adverse affects on the environment through incorrect dosage or spillages.

Q: Hammer is a new herbicide, but where can it be used?

A: Containing 0.66g/litre pyraflufen-ethyl and 240g/litre glyphosate, Hammer is a total horticultural and industrial insecticide that gives effective weed control with visible results in just 24 hours. It controls broadleaved and grass weeds on natural surfaces not intended to bear vegetation and on permeable surfaces overlying soil and is also suitable around ornamental shrubs and trees. It is available in five-litre packs and is best used March to October.

Q: Are there any other new non-selective herbicides available?

A: For use on ornamental and amenity vegetation areas and any natural surfaces not intended to bear vegetation, Finalsan Plus is also offered as a non-selective herbicide. It contains pelargonic acid and maleic hydrazide and kills green plant matter on contact, including ground elder and common horsetail. Mosses and algae on non-permeable pathways can also be controlled. "Finalsan Plus can be used as a clean-up treatment, typically where weed species at different growth stages are present," explains Certis technical officer Alan Horgan. "It's a very powerful, with dual contact and growth regulatory action in one application."

Q: What products can be used on ragwort?

A: Barrier H is an environmentally-friendly product containing 22.9 per cent citronella oil. It is available as a five-litre ready-to-use spray and will control ragwort at all stages of growth at all times of the year.

Is there anything new to give season-long control?

A Rigby Taylor has introduced Kerb Flo + Flexidor 125 tank-mix for residual and post-emergence control of annual and perennial weeds and grasses in ornamental plantings.
