The path, which runs through part of Broxtowe Country Park, is being funded by the Government’s Growth Point initiative.

The scheme helps local communities support sustainable growth through environmental, housing and other initiatives.

"We are committed to improving conditions for cyclists, as cycling has health benefits and is environmentally friendly," said a council spokeswoman.

"As well as providing better cycle access to open and green space the new path will improve the commuter cycle route to many workplaces in the city."

She said local trainees from Broxtowe Education, Skills and Training social enterprise would learn paving and other construction techniques.

Pearce Packer, an 18-year-old local, said, "Horticulture and the maintenance of parks with the city council would be my dream job.

"When I was told the council were offering a work placement on Broxtowe Country Park I jumped at the chance to volunteer. I’ll be working on the cycle path."

The path is part of a phased project at the park. First stage was completed last December and included improvements to entrances and footpaths worth £160,000.

Sheriff of Nottingham and Councillor Leon Unczur, said: "The cycle paths are perfect bolt-ons to our existing programme of improvements to this park."
