Suprifin from Holland-Select emerged as the highest-yielding variety in the two-year, Horticultural Development Company (HDC)-funded trials of 12 leading varieties carried out by the Processors & Grower Research Organisation at its base near Peterborough.
Monica and Witkiem Manita were the earliest varieties to mature, while Listra - the control variety - had the highest number of pods per plant. Meanwhile, Witkiem and the brightly-coloured Greeny were judged by the tasting panel to have the best flavour.
The evaluation also looked at percentage of beans to whole pods and difference in length of snag attachment.
"These findings will help improve production efficiency," said HDC knowledge transfer manager Rosie Atwood.
