British-backed pepper takes top international award

The Angello seedless snacking pepper, the result of a breeding programme instigated by Melrow Salads in 1995, took the Innovation Award at the Fruit Logistica in Berlin earlier today.

The result of 15 years breeding at Hazera Genetics in collaboration with Syngenta, the Angello is currently grown by three growers in Spain, Israel and the Netherlands, and is currently only available in the UK through 100 branches of Marks & Spencer.

The award winner is decided not by a jury but from votes cast by the over 56,000 visitors to the three-day event, from a shortlist of ten finalists.
