Bournemouth's parks boost happiness

Parks and the public realm have helped to make the locals of Bournemouth the happiest in the UK, a survey has found.

The poll of 27,000 people asked them to rate their nearest town on a host of qualities including parks, character and personality, health care, schools and safety. The resort featured in the top five of all the categories and topped the list for parks, outdoors and schools.

Pam Donnellan, chief executive at Bournemouth Borough Council, said: "In particular I'm pleased to see the town's parks and schools come top of the list. This is recognition of the hard work and commitment our staff continue to give in helping to make Bournemouth a place we can all be proud of."

A spokesman for estate agent Rightmove said the survey was carried out to mark the launch of a new website and asked people to rank various factors of their town.

The Times reported the locals were "obviously a cheerful bunch, barely registering a complaint".
