Bord na Móna

The Garden Centre Outlet of the Year (destination) category is sponsored by Bord na Móna Growise, which also supports the Myeloma UK charity.

Bord na Móna Horticulture is the leading Irish supplier of growing media and barks in Ireland and the UK. As part of Bord na Móna plc, which was founded more than 80 years ago, the company manufactures and supplies a range of growing-media products for both professional growers and home gardeners.

Bord na Móna Horticulture has the largest green waste composting facility in Ireland, taking in garden waste and large quantities of spent grain from the largest stout brewery in the country.

Last year was a very exciting time for the company with the acquisition of White Moss, one of the largest green waste composting companies in the UK. This has provided Bord na Móna Horticulture the opportunity to strengthen its position in the UK retail market, both delivering security of non-peat feedstock supply and new manufacturing, storage and distribution sites throughout the UK.

The reputation of Bord na Móna Horticulture is built on consistently delivering excellent products and high-quality Irish peat. Its ongoing commitment to quality has been recognised by the industry as the winner of 14 Which? Best Buy awards (2010-17).

The Bord na Móna Growise brand was launched in 2010 to cater to the retail market across the UK and Ireland, and it is at the forefront of developing top-quality growing media. The range includes peat-free and peat-reduced multipurpose composts, specialist composts and grow-your-own planters in addition to a range of barks, soil improvers and fertilisers.

The past two years have been a particularly exciting time for Bord na Móna’s Growise brand, following the launch of the Pro 5 Premium range in 2016, comprising an all-purpose compost and a fertiliser. Both the compost and fertiliser products have been exceptionally well received by the industry, gaining listings in hundreds of outlets across the garden centre channel, which has seen like-for-like double-digit growth over the past two years.

The key the to success of Bord na Móna Growise Pro 5 All Purpose Compost is its carefully crafted, traditional formula. This follows the Bord na Móna ethos of manufacturing consistently excellent products, with a blend of high-quality Irish peat and sustainable alternative ingredients. These ingredients are mixed with essential plant nutrients to produce a premium compost, perfect for germinating seeds, growing on seedlings, tubs and baskets. The sustainable ingredients provide natural nutrients and bigger, brighter blooms, while vermiculite optimises air-water balance to ensure healthy roots. A wetting agent is added to the compost to help easy and even wetting-up when watering.

Bord na Móna Growise Pro 5 All Purpose Fertiliser is formulated as an easy-to-use, single-application, complete garden fertiliser. It contains 10 essential plant nutrients as well as seaweed and humic acid, which release over the season to support growth, enhance flowering and increase crop yields. It includes all major, secondary and trace nutrients needed for strong, healthy plants.

The garden was conceptualised by award-winning designers John Everiss and Francesca Murrell, and received a silver gilt medal for its innovative design. Bord na Móna Growise will continue its support of the Myeloma UK charity as the show garden moves to its new home at the Hospice of St Francis in Berkhamsted, Hertfordshire.

Bord na Móna Growise is proud to support the Horticulture Week Business Awards’ Garden Centre Outlet of the Year (large/destination) category for a third year.
